RC Cars/Trucks/Parts/Tools/Accessories on eBay!
The betty was the first "performance" SCX24 that I bought... It really wasn't a performer. Well, compared to stock C10's it was a beast, but compared to anything with a few upgrades, it was a pig!
Then we began the path of mods and upgrades. Wheels/Tires, Brass, Servo, Furitek ESC, Mofo Motor, Shocks... cut up the body... It still looks like a B-17 Betty, if you squint really hard.
On the first visit to the hobby shop with Chris from microRCobsessions, this had just come out. He got the blue one, I got the red. I wanted to see if I could make a truck that maintained the "scale" look, but performed well with budget upgrades mostly from Amazon.
I went with portals that were not budget at all, but they were red!
after that I tried some shocks, these off brand wheels and tires, and the injora motor because I wanted to keep the stock esc/receiver with the LED setup. It's not a bad little truck, and even though Chris did not like to compete, I was able to run similar lines at his course.
Hard Body, 24th (actually 20th) scale, marriage of models and RC. Check, Check, and Check!
Lexan is cool for performance, but I want to partake in the scale aspect of the hobby, and 10th scale can get soooo expensive, so I tried using models as a way to satisfy that curiosity. After trying to get some of my 24th/25th scale models to look right on the chassis of the SCX24, it just was not going to work. Somebody is lying.
I searched a little bit bigger models and found a few 20th scale models that looked really cool. The S10 was one of the least popular and least expensive, so I bought it to see if it would work, and dammint if it didn't! It was a lot of trials and errors, and I wanted to keep as much detail (motor/interior/etc) as possible, and I feel like I really accomplished that.
If since gone on to upgrade the electronics and suspension so it handles itself a lot better!
After the successes of the S10CX24, I wanted to go bigger and badder.... and thus the Custom Van Project was born.
This thing was fun to fabricate. cutting up the model and finding a mounting point for the SCX24 Chassis. Mixing and matching links to get the wheelbase dimensions as close as I could. This was a fun build.
I tried using an amazon motor ESC combo that looked beefy for something a little bit bigger than these, but it didn't work at all.... so I went with the tried and true Furitek system. I got the Breaking Bad duo to pilot and co-pilot this beast, and even though it's not a performer, and anytime there is a wreck, something is falling off, this thing looks really cool and is a challenge to drive.
This was an investment that has really paid off! I purchased this rig from marketplace because it was more like a 2-for-1 type deal, because it originally started off as a B-17 betty, but I'm pretty sure the original owner replaced every single part which he included the originals so I got 2 trucks.
The setup that he had was frustrating because the steel axles that he chose were terrible! I really think he sold it out of frustration. I put back some of the axial axles with brass parts to give it some low down weight, and it climbs like a spider monkey! and I have another complete Betty setup that I'm looking to do something else with.
This was one of the original purchases... so it was one that got completely changed. Carbon fiber frame, Furitek motor/esc, servo, and a lot of brass... this thing became one of the better performers that I have.
I'm not sticking with the deadbolt body for much longer, I have a couple of choices that I'm tossing around.
What can I say that hasn't already been said before. When this thing came on the scene it made a big splash. A lot of people were skeptical of it because it didn't carry the familiar brands that they were used to, but I fell in love instantly. It as the first thing that I had with 2 gears which made it super fun.
This was one of those underrated models like the Redcat Gen 8 that I had so much fun with, so I thought I'd try it out, and I'm glad I did.
A lot of stuff that I had learned (and bought) from the SCX24 world transferred right over.
It is going through some changes now, I've extended the back links and upgraded that terrible servo horn along with more brass and such. Can't wait to see what this turns out to be.
Shoutout to my boy Chris (R.I.P.) who made that custom skull head that I had to put up in the cab. This thing is wicked through and through.
I don't know why I got this one. I don't like keeping things stock. It's so pretty though. I changed up a couple of little things, but it's about to be changed up quite a bit more. As cool as that body is, I have to do something different with it soon.
